ADU Rack

One closet rack replaces the ADU closet's tangle of gear: the network switches, the new 8-bay NAS, six Sonos Amps, the UPS, the AV matrix, and the game consoles. Everything below is the current, owner-locked plan — not the earlier drafts that got argued down along the way.

25URIVECO open-frame rack — 22U used; U12 and U24 are airflow, U25 is spare
43 × 40 incloset front zone once the 11 in shelves come out (taped 9/26) — the rack spins in it
190 WPoE budget across both rack switches — two USW-24-PoE, 95 W each (Pro Max 16 moved to Garage 1, 2026-09-28)
Sat 9/26rack due today — not on site as of this afternoon; UPS follows Oct 1

Closet prep: Thursday, October 1, handyman and electrician together. Full instructions with photos and the back-wall drawing: ADU Closet Prep.

What's decided

This closet went through several rounds of "will it fit" before landing here. The short version: it fits, it spins, and the money's been spent.

The rack

  • RIVECO 25U adjustable open frame, $292.80 — 21 in wide, posts adjustable 20–30 in, square holes with cage nuts (fits the UniFi NAS rails), casters + leveling feet, 1,400 lb tested
  • Posts get set at 24–25 in — inside every rail kit's range (NAS, UPS, shelves) and the depth that lets it spin
  • Arrives Saturday 9/26

The closet

  • Taped 9/26. It is an L under the stairs, not the ~90 in deep box earlier drafts assumed: a 43 × 40 in front zone once the 11 in deep left-wall shelves come out (32 in wall-to-shelf today), plus a 22 × 19 in nook at the back right where the outlets and every in-wall cable land. 59 in along the right wall. Door 26 in clear, hinged left, opens out.
  • "Widening to 43" means pulling those shelves — no construction. Not done yet.
  • At 24–25 in posts the rack sweeps ≈37 in turning: 6 in of margin across, about 3 in front-to-back — it has to sit centred in the front zone, and the nook is cable-drop space, not rack space
  • Headroom is 6–8 ft at the door end, but the ceiling slopes down under the stairs over the shelf side. The soffit height over that side is the one number still untaped — the rack's top corners sweep under it when it turns
  • No roll-out, no enclosed cabinet: the rack turns in place, cabled and powered from overhead

Power circuit

  • The back-wall outlet is on its own dedicated 20 A circuit — confirmed, nothing else on the property competes with the rack
  • Worst case (all six Amps playing) draws ~14–15 A — inside the 16 A continuous limit

Cooling

  • No fan inside the rack — an open frame with a vent gap doesn't need one
  • The closet exhaust fan + a matching low intake is the actual cooling system (still to be picked/installed)
  • A rack-top temperature sensor reports to Home Assistant and pages at 90°F; it doesn't control anything
ADU closet plan view (taped 2026-09-26) shelves, 11 in — come out 43 in clear with the shelves out (32 in wall-to-shelf today) 40 in 59 in along the right wall nook 22 in 19 in door — 26 in clear, hinged left, opens out the rack has to pass through here RACK 21 × 26 in LV drop pwr drop front — faces the door WALL PANEL — in the nook 4U hinged bracket on the nook's back wall, where every in-wall cable enters, ≈5–6 ft below the ceiling. Wired once — ≈39 in behind the rack centre. OUTLET — stays where it is Dedicated 20 A circuit. Two 25 ft 12 AWG cords run up and over. THE SPIN ≈37 in dressed (33.4 in bare) inside a 43 × 40 in zone: 6 in of margin across, ≈3 in front-to-back. Rack must be centred; the nook is not rack space. RACEWAY — overhead, dashed Up the nook wall, across the ceiling, ~2 ft loop down onto the rack top. Nothing runs sideways to anything fixed. UNTAPED: the stair soffit Ceiling slopes down over the shelf side. Rack top (~56 in on casters) must clear it through the whole turn. 6–8 ft at door. LV duct: 16 network + 2 coax + 6 speaker power duct: 2 × 12 AWG, ≥12 in from data swept circle when the rack spins
Figure 2 · Closet plan view — taped 2026-09-26Looking straight down, door at the bottom, drawn to scale from the owner's tape and sketch (shorter reading kept where two disagreed). The closet is an L under the stairs: a 43 × 40 in front zone once the 11 in deep shelves along the left wall come out (32 in wall-to-shelf today), and a 22 × 19 in nook behind it on the right holding the outlets and the wall panel; 59 in along the right wall; door 26 in clear. Rack 21 in wide on a 26 in wheel base, posts at 24–25 in, centred in the front zone. The dressed swept circle of ≈37 in leaves 6 in across and about 3 in front-to-back — it spins, but only centred, and only if its top clears the under-stair soffit, which is still untaped. The old "≈90 in deep" figure on earlier versions of this drawing was an estimate and was wrong.

Rack layout, bottom to top

Heaviest gear sits lowest. Two slots stay open on purpose — one for airflow above the Amps, one for a game console's exhaust — which is how 23 of the rack's 25 rack-units end up "used."

What changed recently: the Mac mini came off this shelf plan entirely (it's on its way out), and the PlayStation 5 joined as the AV matrix's fourth input — that's the console shelf at U22–24. Exact rack-unit numbers get a final check when the rack is physically built (build-order step 4) — this table is the plan, not a confirmed as-built.

The wall-power PDU is a 0U strip on a rear post and never appears in the front view. Where the design doc differs: its own “Front elevation” section is the older 22U table from 2026-09-21. That version has a patch panel at U15, one switch rather than two, expansion blanks at U20–21 and a fan/controller panel at U22, and it predates both the PlayStation 5 and the Xfinity shelf. Later owner decisions inside the same doc supersede it: the in-rack CLOUDPLATE T2 fan was cut on 2026-09-22 (an open frame vents to the closet exhaust instead), and the fan/controller slot went with it — so nothing is drawn at the top of this rack but the console's exhaust gap. The wall-power strip is a 0U unit on a rear post (owner confirmed 9/27), so it is not in this front view or the table's numbered rows.

Wall panel and cable plan

Every wire that isn't already inside the rack lands on one wall panel, wired once. Reaching it again later means pulling the rack out of the closet — a rare job, not routine service.

Runs
16 shielded Cat6A network cables · 2 coax · 6 speaker zones (4 conductors each — L+ L− R+ R−)
Panel A (network + coax)
24 keystone couplers — the in-wall cables already have plugs on them, so this panel uses couplers, not punch-down jacks: 1 uplink · 2–3 Garage 1 ×2 (feeds the Garage 1 switch — USW Pro Max 16 PoE, owner decision 2026-09-28 — which carries camera runs C07 + C08) · 4 side gate · 5–7 the three G6 Pro Entry doorbell runs — C10 ADU front door, C11 main-house front door, C12 kitchen door · 8 camera run C02, the backyard-deck G6 180 · 9–11 other rooms · 12–16 unnamed · 17–20 spare · 21–22 TVs (patched to the AV matrix, never a switch) · 23–24 coax
Camera runs
Four of the runs on the Camera Wiring Plan terminate in this rack — C10, C11, C12 (doorbells) and C02 (backyard deck). They patch to the USW-24-PoE, which has the PoE budget for all four. Panel A map (owner, 9/26): 1 uplink · 2–3 Garage 1 (two runs suspected) · 4 side gate (new) · 5–7 doorbells · 8 C02 · 9–11 other rooms · 12–16 unnamed · 17–20 spare · 21–22 TVs (moved beside the coax) · 23–24 coax — four spares left.
Panel C (speaker)
24 screw-terminal posts, four per Amp (L+ L− R+ R−) — an exact fit for six Amps, no spare ports
Mounting
Both cable managers live on the same wall bracket as the panels, keeping the network/coax bundle and the speaker bundle separate all the way to the panel face
Labels and tests
Required on every cable: labelled at both ends (port number and run name), terminated to spec, tested end to end with the cable tester and the result recorded. A port with no recorded pass is not used.
Where it goes
Back wall of the back bay, directly over the two old two-gang openings, on a stud-anchored backer; low-voltage duct up the left corner, power duct up the right, the outlet moved to the bay's right side wall. Prepped Thursday 10/1 — see ADU Closet Prep.

Panel C is 24 screw-terminal binding posts (12–16 AWG in the back, banana jumpers in the front), four per Amp — an exact 24-of-24 fit, no spare. Amps 1–4 are the four laundry-room units (Deck · Family Room · Pool · Living Room); 5–6 are ADU and Garden, the two already in this closet. ADU and Garden are Connect:Amps — the RackStackMount kits don't fit them (two kits take Amps 1–4); they need a shelf or their own mount.
Figure 3 · Wall panel port mapThe whole 4U hinged bracket, top to bottom as it gets mounted: Panel A (network + coax), a cable manager for that bundle, Panel C (speaker), a cable manager for the speaker bundle. Four camera runs land on this panel (owner, 2026-09-23), numbered as they are on the Camera Wiring Plan: the three G6 Pro Entry doorbells on ports 5–7 — C10 ADU front door, C11 main-house front door, C12 kitchen door — and the backyard-deck G6 180, C02, on port 8. Ports 2–3 are the Garage 1 runs (the owner thinks there are two; the USW Pro Max 16 PoE out there carries C07 and C08 — owner decision 2026-09-28), port 4 is the new side-gate run. The two TV HDBaseT lines sit on 21–22, beside the coax, per the owner (9/26). That leaves 4 spare ports (17–20). Ports 12–16 are live in-wall runs whose destinations nobody has identified yet — different from a spare, which is empty. The six Amps, left to right: Deck, Family Room, Pool, Living Room (the four in the laundry rack today) and ADU, Garden (the two already in this closet — ADU is wired to the closet switch, Garden reaches it over SonosNet). The Primary Bedroom and Primary Bathroom Amps stay in the Primary Suite closet. ADU and Garden are the older Connect:Amp model, which the RackStackMount kits do not fit — they need a shelf or their own mount. Panel C has no spare at all: six Amps × four conductors fills all 24 posts exactly, which is why an extra 6-pack of posts is worth having on hand; its posts are drawn in the real red/black of the banana jacks, red positive.

Full placements on the Camera Wiring Plan.

On the wall and ceiling: raceway replaces the loose J-hooks originally planned, run on both the wall and the ceiling. Cable ties to the rack posts use metal D-ring hooks (4 on the data-cable post, 4 on the power post) so a rack spin loads the D-rings, not the plugs; the ceiling drops use bridle rings screwed into the joists.

Check before mounting. What actually shipped is 1.4 × 1.6 in raceway, ×2, 99 in each — not the 2 × 2 in duct originally picked for this job. The bundle it needs to carry (16 shielded network cables + 2 coax + the speaker bundle) works out to roughly 2 square inches of cable, which is bigger than this raceway's cross-section on paper. Hold the actual raceway up against the actual cable bundle before cutting or screwing anything to the wall — don't assume it fits just because it's what arrived.

Power

The UPS

  • Tripp Lite SMART1500RM2U, 1,350 W, on the 4POSTRAILKIT rails (the UPS ships with 2-post ears only, and 46 lb hanging off front ears alone isn't acceptable)
  • Bridges the ~100 ms cut-over to the house's Enphase battery — it doesn't need to ride out a long outage, the battery does that
  • Arrives Oct 1

The wiring

  • Two 25 ft, 12 AWG cords run from the back-wall outlet up and over to the rack — one for the UPS, one for the rear power strip
  • Battery-backed group: both switches, NAS, hub + Apple TV shelf — roughly 300 W typical, 650 W worst case
  • Wall-power group: six Amps, AV matrix, Xfinity boxes, PS5 — up to ~1,300 W with every Amp playing at once
  • Full worst case on the one dedicated 20 A circuit: ~14–15 A, inside the 16 A continuous limit

Build order

you hands-on · claude keyboard · GATE stops until you say go. This is the doc's canonical ten-step sequence — if anything elsewhere drifts from it, this order wins.

  1. youBefore buying rack or cables — mostly done

Tape the closet and settle spin vs. the front-access fallback (plan view taped 9/26: 43 × 40 in front zone, spins with ~3 in front-to-back margin — still owed: the stair-soffit height over the shelf side, and the shelves have to come out first); confirm the four laundry-zone speaker runs actually reach this closet (still to confirm); the six Amps are identified (Deck, Family Room, Pool, Living Room, plus ADU and Garden already in this closet) — the open piece is how the two Connect:Amps mount, since the kits don't fit them.

  2. youCloset prep — Thursday 10/1

Handyman + electrician: shelves out, faceplates off, outlet moved to the bay's right side wall, patch and paint, backer, wall bracket and both ducts up. ADU Closet Prep.

  3. youCooling first

Exhaust fan + low intake installed on the closet's left wall, thermostat set, the rack temperature sensor and its 90°F alert live in Home Assistant before anything else goes in.

  4. claudeA third copy of the backups

The off-box HA and InfluxDB backups live on the UNAS 2 — the NAS being migrated. Copy the latest backups somewhere that is neither NAS, and vzdump the Proxmox guests before touching anything.

  5. youBuild and burn in the rack, in the room GATE · UniFi-store items in hand first

UPS, both switches adopted and named, Sonos spanning-tree settings applied, NAS and NVR up, the heat-test passed — before the rack ever moves into the closet.

  6. claudeNAS migration

Copy Music and the HA backup share to the UNAS Pro 8; re-point the media server's music mount, Music Assistant, and the nightly backup jobs; prove a restore actually works. The old UNAS 2 stays powered and untouched until that restore is proven.

  7. youTerminate the wall panel

With the bracket already up from Thursday: wire Panel A and Panel C. Every cable labelled at both ends with its port and run name, every run terminated and tested end to end with the cable tester, results recorded, nothing live until it passes. Test the two TV HDMI-extender lines for picture and power, then hang the raceway and cable bundles.

  8. youOutage A — switches only GATE · you reachable

Move the hub, Apple TV, matrix and existing lines onto the new switches in place. Verify Home Assistant, Grafana, the control site, TVs, and the ADU Sonos zone by name. Rollback: re-patch to the old closet switch, which stays adopted and powered until this step is done.

  9. youOutage B — the rack goes in GATE

Roll the built, cabled rack into place, lock the casters, fit the anti-tip strap, plug the wall ends in by label. Verify everything again.

  10. youOutage C — Sonos GATE · one zone at a time

Move the four laundry Sonos units one at a time, one Ethernet jack each. Verify each zone plays by name and that no switch port goes into a spanning-tree fault. Rollback: the unit goes back to its laundry-room port.

  11. claudeClose it out

Confirm the watcher monitor is alive, log the whole cutover in BUILD-LOG.md, push device names into UniFi, update the network map. The old (pre-rebuild) closet switch is now surplus — Garage 1 is covered by the relocated Pro Max 16 PoE, not this switch (owner decision 2026-09-28).

Open items

  1. The six Amps are settled (9/26): Deck, Family Room, Pool, Living Room from the laundry rack, plus the two already in the ADU closet — ADU and Garden. Primary Bedroom and Primary Bathroom stay in the Primary Suite closet. Open consequence: ADU and Garden are Connect:Amps, which the RackStackMount dual kits don't fit — two kits take the laundry four, and the two Connect:Amps need a 1U/2U shelf or a Connect:Amp-specific mount (U6–11 as drawn assumes six kit-mounted Amps). Confirm by reading the top of each ADU-closet unit. One Amp's rear label still needs reading for its actual amperage.
  2. Soffit height: the ceiling slopes under the stairs over the shelf side; tape floor-to-soffit there before the rack rolls in. Under about 60 in, the spin is off and the front-access design (wall panel forward, sliding shelves) becomes the plan.
  3. Pull the left-wall shelves (11 in deep) — that is the whole "widening"; the rack needs the full 43 in.
  4. NVR: ordered 9/25 (NVR G2, processing). Protect keeps running on the UDM Pro until it arrives.
  5. Laundry speaker runs: confirmed by the owner in future tense ("will reach this closet") — worth a physical check before Outage C, not just before ordering.
  6. Closet exhaust fan + intake grille: still an open pick — this is the rack's actual cooling system, so it can't wait until last.
  7. Raceway: the 1.4×1.6 in power-cord raceway never arrived (carrier returned it, refunded 9/27). Power cords will run in their own 2×2 duct instead — a third 2×2 pack is ordered (9/27, arriving 9/28). Confirm the low-voltage 2×2 run swallows 16 network + 2 coax + 6 speaker before cutting.
  8. Possible duplicate order: an earlier "believed cart" and the confirmed 2026-09-23 Amazon order both list a RIVECO rack and a Tripp Lite UPS — worth checking whether that's one order described twice or genuinely two of each before assuming a duplicate.
  9. NAS drives and RAID level: RAID 5 needs at least three drives; only two are bought. A third drive vs. running RAID 1 for now is an open call, as is whether the earlier (separate) UNAS 2 drive purchase is now redundant.
  10. Rack casters: RIVECO's listing states locking casters — worth confirming they actually lock once the rack is on site.
  11. 10G/2.5G capability lost from this rack (owner decision 2026-09-28). With the Pro Max 16 reassigned to Garage 1, both switches in this rack are USW-24-PoE — each has only 2× 1G SFP, no SFP+ and no 2.5G ports (confirmed at techspecs.ui.com). The NAS (UNAS Pro 8, planned for a 10G SFP+ DAC) and the NVR (UNVR G2, 10G SFP+ + 2.5G RJ45) both drop to 1G, and the 10G DACs already bought (a twin-pack + the UniFi 0.5 m DAC) have no 10G port left in this rack to plug into. Options, owner's call: accept 1G for the NAS/NVR; add a small 10G switch or aggregation device to the rack; or keep the Pro Max 16 here and give Garage 1 a smaller switch instead. Not decided here.
  12. PoE budget, recomputed for the new switch placement (owner decision 2026-09-28): this rack — two USW-24-PoE at 95 W each (confirmed at techspecs.ui.com); C10/C11/C12 (3× G6 Pro Entry, 18 W) + C02 (G6 180, 15 W) = 69 W, comfortably inside one switch's 95 W budget. Garage 1 — USW Pro Max 16 PoE, 180 W budget; C07 (G6 180, 15 W) + C08 (G6 Turret, 12.5 W) = 27.5 W, comfortably inside budget.
  13. Second USW-Lite-8-PoE ("to order," was for the Primary Suite closet) — owner to confirm: cancel? With C01 now routed from the drain box instead of the Primary Suite closet, that switch order (and the USW Media Rack port-18 trunk change it needed) has no camera left to feed. Not cancelled here — flagged for the owner's call.
  14. Drain box enclosure needs to be sized up (owner decision 2026-09-28): the ~$30 vented NEMA 3R enclosure already planned for the UDB bridge at the culvert now also has to fit the USW-Lite-8-PoE switch (99.6 × 163.7 × 31.7 mm, confirmed at techspecs.ui.com) plus its power brick — a box sized for just the UDB is very likely too small. The drain box's only uplink is the wireless UDB bridge (signal last read −74 dBm off Garage 3, marginal), which now carries two camera streams (C01 + C09) instead of one — a heavier load on a link that was already flagged as marginal; a WiFiman signal walk before mounting matters more now, not less.
